So (not so) fun fact, Hume was an atheist and when he died people had to guard his tomb to stop people wrecking it for him being an atheist.

Really horrible. Old Carlton cemetery is a cool place to go.

Didn’t know that. Not shocked, that’s par for the course for religious fundamentalism.

Yeah, Hume was OG. He single handedly destroyed the “intelligent design” watchmaker analogy back in the day that Christians loved so much. Pretty ballsy overall to be atheist in that era, even if he was subtle about it.

Ballsy to be an atheist in a place like 18th century Scotland! I don’t think I can understate just how religious Scotland was back in the day, and how Presbyterian it was. Christmas didn’t become an official Holiday here until 1958, Boxing day wasn’t an Official Holiday until 1974. The reason why Hogmanay is such a big thing here (it’s basically our national Holiday) was because Pre-Reformation, people when mad on Christmas. When the Reformation happened, that stopped (because Christmas “wasn’t biblical”), so everyone moved their festivities to New Years Eve.

Yeah they were a pretty vocal, and violent, part of the whole Charles I civil war debacle if I’m not misremembering, which was still a fairly fresh memory in the 1700’s.

Yeah I was also wondering where the fuck they got that from. It’s very pearl-clutchey for The Guardian, but they’ve been slowly deteriorating over the years. There is for sure a quality difference between different desks.

Looking at you, female opinion pieces about their kids or their sexlife.

I like to believe he’d have a chuckle at his tomb being very gently defaced by the “Anti Metaphysical Front”. Looks like it was chalk and some knitted stuff or some fabric or something. Not like they took crowbars to the place. It’s frankly pretty clickbaitey but I thought it was funny.

    From the article:

The group also posted photographs of strange paraphernalia found at the Old Calton burial ground, including nails hammered through red candles, chalked symbols and red tape in which the words “anti meta physical front” were printed.

    😂

In other news, college kids reportedly “bored and drunk”.
