Anyone on the fence about it, the books just get better and better as it goes on.
There’s certainly some questionable side characters, and the main character has main character syndrome, but it all makes sense as the story goes along.
It’s one of those series where you just have to sit back and tell yourself that he’s the main character and just enjoy it and not over analyze it , I’ve heard some people argue that Carl is a Mary sue but I disagree and think that he’s just the main character.
I just read the first book this week (in 2 days). Got about 50 pages in and ordered the 2 in the series to arrive from bookshop.org and I’m impatiently awaiting their arrival. I’m kind of broke but I’m debating whether I should just order the rest of the series now or wait until I finish the other books.
Just get them all. Unlike most series, each book is a significant jump in quality from the previous.
If you have access to a library, that can be another option.
You could ‘borrow’ them via Z Library and then buy them later when you have more more uncommitted cash.
How well written are they? I’ve tried a lot of popular books lately and they’ve been full of plot holes, gratuitous fan fic and exposition plus loads of other shit an editor should have caught.
Your mileage may vary. I find the writing crude but I still enjoy the books as light reading.
My main (but not only) beef is that the narration of the dungeon (the “ai”) talks like a 16yo boy. Lots of swearing, sexual allusions, whores and bitches, etc. Then the main character rolls his eyes or makes a comment to show disapproval. But it’s still in the book, constantly, so you’re supposed to find it funny.
No plot holes as far as I can tell, though.
I found the prose to be serviceable, the plotting/pacing to be quite good, and the characters of varied complexity. It’s a fun romp and a light read. The sibling comment about juvenile humor is accurate, you’ll have to tolerate a certain level of ongoing sexdoll/fart/gore jokes. It’s relatively benign.
The author does seem to think the interior of any living being is made of spaghetti though, based on his description of every injury sustained by any creature.

If DCC hasn’t grabbed you by 50 pages in, you can be reasonably sure you won’t like the rest of it. Trust me.
This is my system with any book, in fact. There are too many good books waiting to be read for me to power through something I’m not enjoying at all.
I have never heard of that rule before but I love the idea, I will def final start to implement that into my reading because I have stuck through books longer than I needed to and took me too long to realize I didn’t care to read them!
The first book feels a bit forced at the very beginning. Once he hits his groove, it’s one of my favourite series. The first book is good, the later books get better.
They are excellent. The first few books are relatively simple, but well-written. The books subsequent to that are brilliant blends of character growth and plot-driven action-comedy-horror.
And the audiobooks are so good.
I am glad the rest of the world has caught up to DCC.
It is so silly, so fun, and so in tune with the younger generations of people and the sort of concepts and humor that they’d find appealing.

dCC is not my usual type of read but I am genuinely so glad I started reading it. There are so many things about it I have come to really enjoy and it has shot to top becoming one of my favorite book series of all time, I would highly recommend even if you have already read the books to listen to audiobook narrated by Jeff Hayes he does such an amazing job with both Carl and donut and is very talented.
I preordered the audiobook for the upcoming release. The narration is so good!

I feel like I keep hearing people talk about this book every five seconds online but I haven’t seen it at my local library or anything. How did it get so big?
It was initally only available on Amazon and the high seas. It got so big by guerilla online marketing.
It was also on royal road, so people read it there. Same as Crysalis.

Sadly not on LibroFM, I think they’re audible exclusives, so I can’t buy them. The audio is very enjoyable.

I’m thinking of building my own Bookshelf as a replacement for my Lazy Librarian, because It could use Hardcover. Also I liked the interface when I used to Read* so Bookshelf might suit me better.
Anyways, I stupidly pointed Bookshelf at the same folder my Lazy Librarian was using, and they had a bit of a falling out. Stuff was lost, stuff was broken, there was much gnashing of teeth and rolling back.

I haven’t heard the app version. If it’s similar to the Graphic Audio productions it would be a little much (production) for me. I might buy some to show some (non-amazon) support.
The taking the big guy’s (Amazon) money means giving up the little guy’s (me) money. The gamble, for them, is the big guy will give them more money than all the little guys would’ve. I don’t know how much money they got, I just know they took the gamble, so I can’t give them money.
