mocking EV owners for worrying about range – claiming they have a “disease.”

Not exactly what the headline is hinting at.

Out of the entire unhinged rant, Trump did say one accurate thing: the EV take rate in the US is roughly 7%. The problem is that he said it proudly while the rest of the world is rapidly moving to electric transport.

We just got numbers for July a couple of days ago here in Denmark. Sales of EV are now 97% for personal cars!!

Oh, dear. The WHO is gonna have to shut down Danish borders so the disease doesn’t spread.

I fear it may be too late, though. Perhaps the US can shut itself off to the rest of the world.

He is doing his part to make oil expensive and risky, propelling electric car sales everywhere on the planet but the US.

Pretty sure bike sales too. Would love a higher class of ebike, in the UK they are regulated to uselessness if you get a road legal one.

We took the electric car for our families European road trip last week which saw us land in Spain, loop through southern France before returning via Caen. While we were using an app too plan stops with high speed CCS chargers we certainly didn’t need to go out of our way. Unsurprisingly the major trunk routes are well appointed with fast chargers - generally cheaper than the UK fast chargers as well.

Range anxiety isn’t really a thing I feel these days and having regular breaks helps with the quality of the driving.

The only “problem” I see with EVs is when you aren’t able to charge at home or work. But even then it is only slightly more inconvenient then regular fueling as you can often charge while doing groceries for example.

If you can charge at home it even is so much better, as you don’t have to worry about fuel at all and range at larger trips isn’t a problem as regular breaks are a good thing anyways as you already said and most of the time a break takes longer than the charging process anyways (using the bathroom, taking a snack, walking around a bit).

Oh totally. I’m fortunate I have off road parking and a beefy solar grid so my normal runabout and commute is functionally free.

The UK has recently made the process of getting charging gullys for house hold street charging easier to get approved and installed. The remaining challenge is HMO’s and hi rises. We could either mandate lower rates for locals using public charging infrastructure or more ubiquitous low power charging available at hi-rise car parks given most cars will be parked for at least 8 hours “overnight”.

Electric motorcycles, you can realistically carry the battery for them. At least the smaller ones.

Charge it under the desk at work. Make them pay for it.

The “politicize everything” era will hopefully be just an era.

It’s an energy source. It has no inherent political character. Putting the gov thumb on the scale to pick a different “winner” isn’t better.

thumb on the scale like fossil fuel subsidies, tax breaks and not paying for externalities of emissions? Agreed.

I mean yeah, he is obviously trying to pick a winner here, namely “legacy automakers and dealerships”.

And even assuming the POV of being fine with a sort of US-centric populist economic interventionism, you’d think it would make more sense to give people options. What’s more resilient to foreign predations, a multifaceted automotive industry with various power sources, or one that is heavily reliant on importing a non-renewable commodity from stated geopolitical foes?
