Yea, I was thinking pretty explicitly of SciFi, from the 60s/70s vs modern SciFi.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t agree. I love 70s sci-fi, and have aread a huge collection of weird books… But none of them have prose as good as some of the modern books, such as The Final Architecture, The Expanse, or even Red Rising.

And it’s worth remembering what decade it was written in, a lot of the older prose and pacing hasn’t aged well.
I upvote nearly everything, helps drive engagement and keep Lemmy healthy.
Its pretty rare that I downvote, guessing a 90/10, 0or 95/5 split

Artificial, bought a friend’s tree second hand 8 years ago.
Thinking about replacing it next year. Have a toddler, and trying to make Christmas more special, and this one’s old enough it’s lots a lot of it’s needles

Not blasting my retinas at 3 a.m. when I just want to pee is a pretty solid use case. The full bathroom light is tuned for my wife doing makeup, and it hits like a flashbang.
If anything, calling someone’s $30 tinkering project “late-stage capitalism” feels more late-stage than the project itself. Criticizing people for having hobbies is a weird hill to die on.

Yea, my guess is just based on what the strip says (12+12 watts per meter)
Only wattmeter I have is an Ikea ZigBee plug, which does draw reporting. Could use that and measure it’s wattage

yea, i added costco backlit/heated mirrors.
Had to run a new wire from my light fixture, but worth it,.
Pictures a bit old, i’ve replaced the toilet since, as the old one was leaking

yea, havent decided if it will always be on, and brighten, or only turn on when someones there.
The energy cost should be nearly nill, a watt or two (it 12 watts at max, and im using it at 5% for standby!)

?
Total project cost was $30, parts from Aliexpress, and its because i love to tinker

ha ha ha, thanks!
Its not wood, its a click-lock, waterproof vinyl… that just is a really good imitation!

I grew up in the Okanagan, and moved to a rural coastal community.
I miss the seasons, coldy snowy winter’s, asphalt melting summers.
I also miss the fruit and veggies, while I have blackberries here, I don’t have the apples, peaches, strawberries, and endless veggies.

I mainly use ZigBee, with a sprinkling of Wifi.
I think matter is going to continue to grow, both matter and matter over thread, especially with Ikea switching over.

I don’t see a “and they need to host it”
But allowing/enabling community servers would allow it to stay playable at minimum cost to the developers

if i could install and run Home Assistant on this, i could see having a use for it… but that requires me to have complete control, and not samsungs BS

It is, if you are just dealing with bare batteries without any kind of protection, but if you are dealing with cellphones/modern smart devices, not so much

Yea, but that wasn’t a great rest. I love Great Scott, but a lot of comments fairly call out his conclusion.
Most (all?)phones don’t charge at full speed to 100% charge, they fast charge when the battery is almoast empty, and charge slower the more full it gets.

My favorite was groundhogs biteing with their faces. Not their mouthes, their entire faces.
They would bite a lion I’m half.
I’m going from memory, and can’t find a link.
