A good stepping stone product, but netbooks weren’t destined to last long. Beyond the rosie tint of nostalgia, it was a pretty impractical device. Good enough display for DVD video, but no dvd drive or enough onboard storage to handle a selection of movies (at an acceptable encoding for the time, at least). Big enough to require a flat surface or a lap to type on but not powerful enough to justify it, and a very cramped typing surface at that.
Eventually they got replaced by tablets/convertibles, large phones, and ultrabooks. And all much better platforms in all ways, IMO.
I wouldn’t say it’s more toxic, but it certainly is a different atmosphere.
Coming from my curated subs on reddit to mostly browsing All-top on Lemmy, it certainly feels like Lemmys audience is surprisingly more authoritarian-conservative than reddit, despite the very active Linux, FOSS, and privacy communities.
Apple is the platform of standardization (within their walled garden) though. And as much as that shits on consumer choice, it does make for as consistent an experience as possible. That’s valuable for a lot of people but especially developers.
If I were Apple, and I wanted to position the iPhone to compete with something like Nintendo Switch, I would:
Form an exclusive partnership with Sony or Microsoft to officially support their controller.
Have my engineers work directly with that partner to make their cloud gaming and console streaming apps absolutely top notch. Talking “Apple native” feel and functionality.
Sell first-party kickstand cases or popsockets. MagSafe, preferably.
Sell official first-party controller brackets for holding the phone. Bonus, these are “magic” like the keyboard or the pro monitor mount.
Start a licensing deal with 8bitdo for an official co-branded controller.
Start a series of exclusive games featuring a brand mascot character (original or adopt a forgotten one, like Bonk or something idgaf)
Edit, one more very important thing: Allow retroarch in the App Store and allow for roms to be airdropped and for the app to run a restricted SMB server (drop into a specific directory and user approves connections)
All the more reason to switch to Wayland.
“Lifecycle” is not an apple specific thing. Literally everything has a lifecycle that makes the device obsolete/unsupported before it’s useful age is up.
Technology in phones (primarily SoCs, batteries, and displays) moves faster then other categories, leading to the one year generations, but again, that’s something every brand does. It’s insane to suggest that companies continue to maintain old platforms that are in comparatively few pockets against discovered security vulnerabilities or leveraging new features beyond the capabilities of their hardware.
iPhone 8 is now nearly six years old and supports IOS16, with rumors that it may support 17. I’d be surprised if it does, but that’s still a very impressive lifespan for a mobile phone.
I understand apple hate but this is really one place where it’s undeserved.
And touchscreen keyboards (and their haptics) got significantly better, too.
Most of those cool designs were attempts at either maximizing the screen, giving a qwerty keyboard, or both. There were a few odd ones like the ones with the rotary dials, the n-gage, etc. But now we’ve got a form-factor that gives a real good keyboard and a real large screen.
Happens to me all the time with my Networking, Fortinet, Ansible, and Cisco subreddits, and that’s exactly why I’m hesitant to purge and delete my account.
That and I haven’t found comparable communities here.
