It’s a site where you ask questions and people (hopefully experts) answer. That was the main idea behind it. But it was filled with garbage, unhelpful answers and it just went downhill.
Also yeah the fact that Reddit is more popular than Youtube is really weird to me and I don’t quite believe it.
How the hell is Quora more popular than youtube … huh ? Who in their right mind still uses Pinterest and Quora???
2·6 days agoIf you hear ai generated convos they sound pretty brain dead (unresponsive, no idiosyncrasies) so far.
Idk… I think they’re getting pretty good. A year or so back I tried notebooklm’s podcast feature with 2 people I was shocked how realistic the generated sample was. But maybe you’re right this does seem a level up.
12·10 days agoThe mechanisms underlying ZKPs pose an existential threat to everyone’s digital rights, not just kids. The idea behind ZKPs is that you are issued a “token” that vouches for your age every time you log in, creating a constant link back to the entity that verified you. The issuer of the tokens these AV schemes rely on could track every time that credential is used, creating a dangerous trail of metadata on any user they wanted to target. The issuer itself could be pressured by authoritarian governments to remove a user’s access to a service, essentially removing that person’s access to the internet entirely. Without oversight of who has authority to implement and operate these systems, this approach centralizes critical internet infrastructure in the hands of very few actors.
But that’s not how EU age verification actually works, no ?
You verify once and then can use that token offline, and there’s no recontacting the issuer once you log in / sign up (at least supposedly).

The popular Chinese alternative to YouTube, Bilibili, with around 376 million monthly active users, has confirmed plans to expand more aggressively outside China. The company has relaunched its international app for Android and iOS, and removed the previous requirement for overseas users to provide identity documents such as a passport.
Bilibili is also expanding its international presence with hiring in markets including Japan, the United States, and Europe. A new X account aimed at global creators has said that Bilibili is “going global” and that the US and Chinese versions will offer the same content

I get the appeal of this, but I feel this is part of a broader problem of relying on AI for problems that already have elegant, simple solutions. Like relying on LLM’s to tell you what was the last google doc that you viewed is just not sustainable and creates bad habits. Soon people will ask what was the last tab I was just in, instead of using a keyboard shortcut and or having proper tab management.
Imagine using it for your code editor, instead of using the built-in functionality of jump-lists, marks, fuzzy finders and so on… Or switching to an editor that has these things. What file was I just in? Where did I just write this function?

How about learning to just use search?
Not to mention what they do to wildlife that more and more these days get isolated by these roads. Why aren’t they forced to build bridges for wildlife when building a road? Simply not a priority.

Big tech are using every trick in their book to circumvent regulations and to continue building data centers despite local community disapproval over noise, pollution and a myriad of other problems…
Of course, since data centers are (according to the DOJ), “a matter of national, economic, and energy security”, doesn’t matter even if they are ran by illegal gas turbines.

There’s something about Bluesky I just don’t quite like. I have an account, sometimes (rarely) I use it. But for example today I wanted to share a short video with a friend. I send him the link - “only logged in users can see this post (OP himself set this option)” ok, weird but let me download the vid and send him - “nope can’t do that”
They literally added some frontend bullshit to not allow you to download a freaking video. When you Inspect it with developer tools it shows a button… If you try saving it with right clicking it will save the thumbnail instead… I know there are probably easy-ish workarounds but this sort of instagram closedness pisses me off.
Meanwhile in Mastodon I right click and save video as…
I also don’t like the underlying complexity of how decentralization is supposed to work there. That being said, if the choice is between twitter, threads or bluesky, please use bluesky.
I prefer Mastodon, though.
They make more money selling cars. Think of how many cars are needed now that everyone needs their own personal one vs trains where 1 can transport hundreds of people.
Niche content that either is hard to find elsewhere or you will be using something like TikTok which is in no way better.
I even excluded it from my search engines results.
