I live in Spain. I think the idea comes because in a ideal world, there should be outdoor smoker areas and outdoor non-smoker areas. But reality is that bars only have one outdoor area shared by everyone. So if someone don’t want to be bothered by smoke, they can’t use the outdoor area and enjoy the sun of Spain. So at the end, they do this 🤷‍♂️

I don’t smoke anymore, but when I did a lot of these types of bans came into effect, and even as a smoker I really came to appreciate it. When I did finally quit, it was nice to not have to deal with smoke everywhere.

I still think it’s stupid to ban designated outdoor smoking areas at a fucking bar

I had the same reaction as a smoker. It’s really not all bad, and as a now non-smoker, it’s great to not wake up the next day to the clothes I wore to the bar smelling like an ashtray, so I now understand the complaints.

And it saves you, the smoker, money because you’re not chain smoking sitting at the bar anymore.

At the end of the day, though, a beer drinker sitting next to a wine drinker is a bit different than a smoker sitting next to a non-smoker, so the whole “you’re already at a bar!” argument is pretty disingenuous and doesn’t really go far with me.

I’m not sure why someone would feel the need to hang out in a designated outdoor smoking area if they shared your concerns.

I can agree with this, it’s really nice to be able to go to a local brewery and vape locally grown pot on the patio legally.

Tbh I thought it already was banned in stadiums. Seems booze is - strange experience going to see Barca play, being surrounded by Estrella ads but not able to buy the stuff

If you’re outside, it’s ok to smoke.

If people who are outside have a problem with smoke, they can go inside or move over a bit.

Smoking outside is not harmful to others, it’s just kind of annoying for people who get annoyed by it.

It’s dumb not to leave this up to the venue, unless we want to start policing other annoying public behavior like talking on your cell, or chewing food with your mouth, bringing your kids out, etc…

Smoking outside next to people still leads to second hand smoke. Not as harmful as it were inside, but still harmful.

Not even close. The second hand smoke studies were in regards to living with a smoker who smoked in the house.

We’re not that fragile or our own campfires would have killed us in the late Pleistocene.

They might not kill you outright, but they certainly contribute to health problems. Personally, I don’t want other people exposing me to unnecessary health problems.

What do I do when every other person is smoking in the area? Should only smokers be allowed the best seats outdoors, and everyone else has to put up with them or leave?

And yes, we should be policing other disruptive behaviors in public spaces, like loud conversations, screaming children, etc.

By the same logic, where can someone smoke where there aren’t people?

That’s where those people can go if they choose to be bothered by it.

Those dont harm the physical health of people around you… Pretty simple logic there. Thats why smoking in restaurants and such, where this is even more problematic, has been banned for many years now.

Drinking definitely harms the health of others around you, though. Ask anyone who grew up with an alcoholic parent.

Smoking outside is not harmful to others.

Of course it is wtf? There is no safe level of second hand smoking exposure.
If you can smell it, you are inhaling health problems.

Do we care about air quality now?

If we do, there’s way more harmful shit in our air than a smoker, but nobody’s doing shit about that.

Yes. Yes we do. Second hand smoke impacts health directly. And yeah, there is harmful shit in the air. That’s why countries are implementing regulations about exhaust fumes and shit.

A lot of them are already in effect?

Just look up Sunset in the Ruhrgebiet from the 70s. You could see an entire rainbow in the sky because of pollution. We fixed that, now factories have to build massive filters into their exhaust systems.

At least in the EU, Catalysts in cars filter out a lot of harmful stuff. Factories have to monitor their exhaust fumes. And if you think all the regulation in the west did nothing, I welcome you to visit Tehran, where these regulations aren’t in place. Smoking is healthier than breathing this air.

We can do more, we need to do more, but don’t pretend like no one is giving a shit about air quality.
