The Supreme Court appears ready to gut a key tool of the Voting Rights Act that's helped root out racial discrimination in voting for more than a half century.
Yes. They are currently protected from race-based gerrymandering. The Supreme Court already allowed politics-based gerrymandering, which was race-based by another name, so this won’t change things much more than that. But it will change what color the people are who get elected. They could change 2 majority R districts that are both mostly black into one majority white R district and one majority black R district.
Ah okay I understand now. I was trying to figure out how they were gonna get more republican seats in states that are already gerrymandered to shit. This changes WHO gets elected.
Is it possible for those states to even be gerrymandered further?

These areas are protected from gerrymandering by law. This court case is trying to change that.
