A monetary fine doesn’t seem fitting for an attempt to sabotage a competitor’s race/race start.

You didn’t read the article. It outright says that McLaren has placed the marker on an unregulated area which means that other fiddling with it is also unregulated.

The fine wasn’t for fiddling with the marker, it was for attempting it after the gate closed.

Everybody does everything to direct competitors that’s not outright prohibited. See also when Mercedes and Red Bull put a mechanic in the pit box, so that the competitor’s cars have to drive around him and not cross the markings. I’ve read that Mercedes started that but I didn’t verify myself.

We also don’t know if McLaren did anything to RBR leading up to this.

Considering that apparently RB have been doing this since quite some time and McLaren reacted with stronger adhesive, I’m sure there is all kinds of shenanigans from everybody we don’t even hear about.
