Trump has been asking the DoJ about invoking the Insurrection Act over the immigrant “invasion” since, I believe, inauguration day. The escalation of ICE presence, activity, and tacticsay very well be an intentional effort to provoke a resistance that the DoJ would feel comfortable recommending invoking the Insurrection Act over.
I hear you, and I understand this rationale, but I keep feeling as though a lot of people are missing the subtext - they’re going to do it anyway, they don’t need any actual provocation to take those actions, they’ll manufacture (not quite false flag, but in the ballpark) the scenario and narrative required to strip states, cities. and citizens of their rights.
Conservatives and MAGA are salivating at the opportunity to gain the power needed to liquidate their ideological opponents… Frankly, I’d be shocked if they don’t do it, or at least give it the old college try.
Sure, but they would have done it 8 months ago if they had an excuse. We didn’t give them one, and we made it 8 months more without an escalation to overt declaration of martial law.
Even if it seems inevitable, lots of things can happen that change the calculus in our favor (not least of which is Trump’s black heart finally giving out) by just buying more time. On the other hand, if fed up citizens react with violence, that permanently will normalize what’s happening right now.
From the Lemmy responses I’ve seen, I assume people think that’s naive. But I don’t think people can imaginine how much worse it will get if we make it to an overt military state, and how much higher the challenge will be to revert to a semblance of democracy. It’s a one-way ratchet, they have all the weapons, money and institutions, and that’s why Stephen Miller and Trump are so eager for it.
