    Expected a joke.

    Discovered a tragedy.

    Also a neat device.

NY, get your heads out of your asses and just do it. Get it done! 100% of trucks! Big fines for it not being there! Go!

Hell, this should just be all urban areas in the world.

The dude’s priority list at the end…

    1. The poor truck driver (who was non-compliant)
    2. The company’s insurance
    3. The person being killed by the truck

Well I mean I’m guessing he’s part of a union and needs to sell his soul a little bit to the, “one for all,” spirit. I’m hoping when he’s at home away from the union, he’s more for the safety of all individuals than just the company he works for.

Two types of people in the world: those who don’t think about the need for this and those who spent time on liveleak.

That question just might be answered by watching the posted content! But I don’t blame you for not, this was a rough watch.

I got about 15 seconds in before the visceral disgust was too much to bear. I’d rather the answer be a mystery than listen to more fucking “TIL: I am about to preach to you” posters

I watched the entire video, and not just the first 15 seconds. I saw a journalist report how a law in New York City hasn’t been properly implemented, leading to multiple unnecessary deaths a decade later.

I mean, yeah. A lot of innovations in safety is really just stupidly simple things that we learned the hard way (someone being hurt).

The stupid part however isn’t how simple these things are, but rather how hard it is to get through even the most basic changes.

I’ve never seen guards like this either, but more importantly I’ve never seen the large gaps in the side that guides victims to fall beneath multiple wheels.

I suspect all the trucks I’ve seen in Europe left the factory compliant with the regulation, with no need to install side guards.

EU has a lot of fragmented (by country) road laws.

But guards/skirts are usually integrated into the design, not third-party add-ons.

      Random examples:

Trucks will always be needed. Trains can’t go everywhere.

Also, the passenger-train utopia we both want would require lighter-duty high-speed rail, which freight trains wouldn’t be able to operate on

Not boxcars, no. But up to the 50s we had electric rail in my area that handled panel-van kind of packages from station to station, via shipping cars hooked to the same train as passengers.

Then pneumatic tires and gasoline-powered buses got popular and they killed electric rail. We still haven’t the reach, speed, or versatility as we had then, since buses need to fight traffic against cars.
