The decision to halt production of Tesla’s polarizing polygonal pickup marks the end of an error.

Elon Musk, in a post on X, has officially called time on the Cybertruck, stating that “Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production.”

Produced for less than four years, the polarizing pickup is seemingly dying as it lived, with the news being greeted in a flurry of replies in praise of the EV as well as deriding it. James Star, claiming to be a Tesla employee, posted that it was “the saddest news! Cybertruck (was) the best car Tesla sold,” right next to a user called Captain Ford who simply replied to Musk with “Fuck that shitbox.”

And the rest of his cars. The intersection of people who believe in climate change and people who are far right nut jobs has to be vanishingly thin…

It was always heading this way, I am surprised it lasted as long as it did.

I knew it was a flop well before it even came out for one key reason. Remember when the iMac/iPod/iPhone came out, it seemed like everyone else started trying to desperately copy Apple on those. Other businesses saw these and immediately thought “Oh crap we need to catch up now!”. Before iPhone even released Nokia was demoing a phone (that never came out) in which they rushed multi-touch onto Symbian OS just to not look behind.

Cybertruck came out and nobody else even remotely hinted at copying it. Every car company was like ‘Yep, you guys can just go for it, we won’t stop you.’.

The worst thing? The cybertruck is going to forever be a symbol of this era. It’s ridiculous, but so is the age we live in. Fifty years from now, if someone wants to set a movie in the early 2020s, there will be a cybertruck somewhere in the background. It will forever remain an instant visual clue of the era. It’s like how in a sci fi film, if you want to quickly establish that you are not on Earth, you throw second Sun or gas giant into the sky. Just quick visual language saying where or when a setting is or isn’t.

I see so many of these on the road. First time I saw one I thought the graphics card in my brain had gone bad.

Too bad they were starting to grow on me.

This makes me sad for two reasons, one of which might actually be posted in this thread, and that’s that it’s gonna make it harder to see idiots from a quarter mile away. The second of which is my own personal gripe, and that’s because I can’t sing the Cybertruck song anymore.

To the tune of the Spider-Man song: Cybertruck, Cybertruck, only driven by a massive fuck Cybertruck, Cybertruck, only driven by a stupid fuck

A “truck” that can’t carry 4x8 sheet goods is useless.

That and those straight edges kill pedestrians, like they just cut right into them when you have that much force, it’s unavoidable.

Consider the average hood of a minivan. It’s a giant-ass vehicle. It could definitely kill people easily, but the hood is sloped, and the bumper is low, and all the corners are very rounded, making it much safer for pedestrians should a collision occur.
