While we’re at it, how many hours y’all sleep without interruption? I’m screaming SCORE! if I make it 4-5 hours, like, oh thank god. Then I’m up and down for the next 8 hours. Despite being relatively fit, I’m in bed 12-hours a day.

I got problems with kratom and beer, also middle-aged, so I gotta pee a lot. Last time I slept well was working my ass off at Lowe’s. And I do mean working my ass off in the outdoor garden center, in the spring. One thing top of mind as I stomped out, “This is gonna hit your health.” OTOH, I can get out of bed without limping, so I got that going for me.

Jesus. How’s that for a cry for help?

I got hooked on kratom few years back when I used it as a benzo substitute. It’s better than benzos but still no joke. You don’t realize until you’re well into full blown addiction because the effects are so subtle. It started messing with my sleep and my mood, similar to opioids, so in the end I had to quit. The good news is the withdrawal isn’t too bad. I’m now back to being able to just lie down and sleep instantly but it took a while.

Weird enough, unlike caffeine, I can be hyped up on kratom, read my book and fall asleep. But yeah, it makes me easily angered.

I get zero withdrawal, the addiction comes in where I’m laying in bed exhausted thinking, “Man. Just get up and pop 4 and you’ll be awake and enjoying your day.”

Last time I quit I went three weeks binging cheapo energy shots. Talk about withdrawal! The headaches were crippling for 2 or 3 days.

    Math checks out.

    8hrs * 365 days * 48 years = 140160 hours

    140160 hours / 24 hours / 365 days = 16 years total slept

A lot of these numbers cancel each other our, so you’re left with 8 hours/24 hours * Age. 8/24 is 1/3 so it simplifies to Age/3. That’s the number of years we have all slept. A 3 year old has slept for 1 year!

Actually, the 3 yo has probably slept for more than that time since babies sleep so much.

The planet where I worked 12 hours and shouldn’t have been on social media doing math right before going to sleep.

I can either sleep 3.8 hours in any given 2 day period or I can sleep 28 hrs straight, there is no in-between.

from Feb 2020 until December of 2024 I slept on average 3.5 hours every night.

that means I roughly slept 213 days out of 1460 days or roughly 14.6% of the time.

Bruh, I work 3rd shift and have ADHD. I’m lucky to get 5 hrs of real sleep without getting wasted.

I’m in my mid-40s but had tons of sleep issues (both because I didn’t stay asleep long and working multiple jobs at another point). I’d be curious to know how much I slept.

I’ve thought about this a ton. Depressing amount.

I’ve decided to work on improving my quality of sleep drastically and have done it but it wasn’t easy to learn and study my body. In effort to maintain or increase the quality of measured and studied sleep to shave off 2 hours. From 8 hours to 6. Allowing me to live awake and hopefully enjoy 13.3 percent more of my life.

Yes you can cut it down more and gain more living time. This is what I deem more acceptable and I slowly bring the time down more as my baseline improves.

My best advice. Cool your body/brain and dial in your body temp use water cooling like a sleep 8 it’s expensive and subscription, so DIY your own use AI to dial it in if you can, live data. By plugging in your health data to it. Learn your sleep stages, wear a health tracker that’s accurate for heart rate, breathing, pulse ox, HRV, keep stress low and exercise regularly. Stick to a strict schedule of sleep and wake. Avoid fatty meals and snacking hours before bedtime, eat clean and healthy.

There’s no magic bullet, most of its common sense. But you can make major gains if you dial in your body and listen to it. Tune into it. Don’t push through, feel and correct. There’s more but it’s late in my time zone.
