Ok, apparently this is an older scam (article is from 2023), but I’ve been getting these calls non-stop for the last few weeks.

Funny enough, I’m in Canada, so Medicare makes no sense… dumbass scammers don’t even know what the hell they’re doing.

Anyway, when you pick up, it sounds like a person on the other end. When I asked to speak to a human being, it said “oh, I’m sorry, my mic must be acting up”… pretending to act like a person.

As I pressed on, it basically answered in a way that would mimic a human being, and I’m sure some people might fall for it long enough to give up important information.

As AI is used more and more with scams, it’s going to get really difficult to do business with actual companies.

“Scammers using AI to target Medicare subscribers”

FTFY. Nothing new here, has been going on ever since the “Medicare Part C” bullshit.

I swear to fucking god any politician that ran on a platform of “I will end scam calls and do everything in my power to hold not only the companies making them responsible, but also the phone carriers for allowing it to continue” would win 100% of the vote

You probably already know, but it’s never good to answer scam calls. All it does is show them that the number is valid and someone will answer. The same for spam texts. Never text STOP or anything like that because the people on the other end aren’t real companies and are absolutely not following guidelines regarding opt out. All it does is signal that someone is getting the text and not savvy enough to just ignore it.

A few years ago I got fed up with the scam calls and even worse, scam voicemails if i denied the call. I started accepting scam calls and immediately muting my mic. The line stays connected and usually silent from 15-40 seconds and then disconnects.

The amount of scam calls I received went from several a week to a few a year. I’ve had two so far this year. It’s possible my number is being marked as non-working.

100%, but we have been expecting calls, and these have been coming in appearing from “local” phone numbers.

      It’s infuriating.

But if I do get a scam call, I will tag it so the next time that same number calls, we know. Unfortunately, they change their numbers so often, that it’s impossible to know.

Previously, they used to always call with an easily identifiable scam number, like “V23426232425”, and we’d ignore those (although, they’d fill our voicemail up pretty quickly).

With texts, I ignore and block the numbers.

This is why when I moved I kept my old phone number with the old area code. Since I know only a handful of people still in that area code and have them in my phone, when I get a call with that area code I immediately know it’s a scammer trying to make it look like a local call. The fact that caller id can still be spoofed at this day and age is absolutely mindblowing to my little brain. I remember in the 80’s when caller id came out, and here we sit with a 40+ year old bug in the system…
