Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.
In a victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America’s biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises.
With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

Lol, he’s already asking for donations again in his latest ad. Give him more of your money to defeat capitalism!
That’s such a feeble criticism: a socialist, living in a capitalist society where everything costs money, needs money to do things, therefore they’re not really a socialist. There’s no logic to that. Why would anyone imagine that a socialist doesn’t need money to do things in a capitalist society? Is he a fraud because he hasn’t transformed New York into a moneyless society since yesterday (despite not even being sworn in yet)? When did he promise to do that, or is it just right wingers having no clue what socialism is again?

Hope this is the start of a progressive wave.
Mamdani 2028?
Sadly he can’t. Naturalized citizen.
Ahh yes. Laws. Some say we have the best laws. I heard them say it myself.
I don’t understand why the whole country of Republicans are so focused on a mayor. Feels like we need secret service to protect the mayor now with all the fascist shit targeting him.
They’re afraid that this will start a progressive momentum across the us. The new major does need protection. The whole world is watching.
Makes sense to me. He is everything they fear/hate.
Progressive, empathetic, compassionate, intelligent, and brown.
I don’t care what all y’all party poopers and doomers in the comments say, after a year of nothing but complete and utter trash news, I’ll take the wins the progressives won yesterday on Nov 4th.
Same here. Fuck the haters. We’re finally getting somewhere.
Not a hater. Happy for the news. Very.
I’m not looking forward to the response.
It’s a good win. We celebrated. Time to get back to work, cuz it ain’t over.
When centrists inevitably say “yeah, but that’s new york, he couldn’t have won anywhere else,” remember that these are the same people who were lobbing Islamophobic attacks at him.
Some of the shit I’ve seen was honestly disgusting. Especially tying 9/11 to him somehow. Like the racism that’s traditionally coming from Republicans was coming from Democrats too.
Do you have any examples? The racism and attacks against Mamdami ive seen have all been very clearly from right wingers and “independents” that are trump aligned.
I was about to say i stand corrected but I’m reading that article im struggling to find anything Islamophobic in those quotes. Is it because she said he was pro hamas?

Your bar for Islamophobia is conveniently high, then.
I’m tired what am I missing. It sounds like the same Jewish reaction to him we’ve seen for the past 6 months and doesnt seem to be anything to do with Islam and has everything to do with comments hes actually made and since walked back.
I thought it was going to be a dem talking about him eating rice with hands or enacting sharia law. This isnt islamophobia and isnt even news worthy. Having read that article like 3 times now ive got to say its so badly written actual slop outlet.
I’m tired what am I missing.
The ability to recognize Islamophobia when you see it.
It’s almost like there isn’t really a difference between most Republicans and most Democrats…Like some sorta, I dunno, bread and circus show or somethin. Weird
Up until Reagan, the two Parties were pretty much the same. There were Liberal GOPs and and Conservative Dems. Nixon saw that there were a lot of disaffected Dems who hated the Civil Rights Act and pulled them in with his “Southern Strategy.” Reagan was the first to start attacking “Liberals” by name.
Almost like the US is a one party state 🤔 but in typical American extravagance, they have TWO one-parties.
Dog and pony show?
“Joe Manchin is literally the best we can do so stop complaining”
Only stunning if you haven’t been paying attention.
Oh thank god. This is a glimmer of hope. 💙
Yeah between that and VA, NJ, and CA I feel about 5% more hope that things will get better.
Sweet merciful relief.
That’s my mayor 🥹 That’s America’s mayor!
All I can say for sure is that I now feel like like I probably could have accomplished more with my life, considering we are the same age.
remember folks
just because the democrats allowed someone like this win does not mean we will get living wages, universal healthcare, etcetera
only means the democrats want us to view them as progressive and any progress must be taken with a grain of salt
Almost the whole democrats leaders was indiferent to Mamdani or tried to sabotage him. It is the opposite on what you claim. Nobody hold a gun at your head and force you to a candidate you don’t like
what are you talking about?
that we heard all this before
remember when there was no hope and no change from the democrats after eight years of empty promises
remember when your party got on the ballot?
Let’s not get too excited.
He barely edged out a guy with a history of sexual harassment and a radio shock jock.
Let’s downplay his success so we don’t have to move to the left.
But he won. Against the immense media apparatus that was spitting fibs 24/7 and the band of politicians calling him the Antichrist.
8% lead in a country that fear muslims and socialism is impressive.
Getting a majority vote in a three way contest ain’t nothing.
In the last three elections, the Dem candidate got over 60% of the vote.
And wasn’t in a contest where three candidates were going to get some non-trivial amount of vote.
Kinda proving my point here.
Cuomo resigned after his sex scandal, and still managed to get a substantial portion of the vote.
You can’t ascribe all that to the billionaires. A lot of people really, really hate anything that looks even slightly progressive, and that’s in one of the Bluest towns in the country.
A lot of people really, really hate anything that looks even slightly progressive
“So many people are saying…” - trump.
Was there billions on dollars spent to make Mamdsni looks like Satan?
Barely? It was a sweep. Cuomo didn’t stand a chance. Stop hating and start supporting, the movement needs you. Yes, you.
How long until the hope sours and the promises are broken?
Don’t know, nobody is perfect. Let’s hope he is willing and allowed to make more positive changes than negative ones. He seems like a really thoughtful intelligent person.
Clearly you’ve either never had hope or have already given up.
I get it, we’ve all been burned by politicians promising things and never delivering. I think it’s easier to deliver on campaign promises at a local level than in national politics, though. Even at the scale of NYC.
For an example of a mayor of a large city delivering on their promises, look at Anne Hidalgo in Paris (coincidentally, also a member of a socialist party).
And thus this is how progressive America can win back the country.
You had to leave America to find an example.
Désolé, je ne suis pas des États-Unis, j’espère que tu puisses trouver quelqu’un avec plus de familiarité des politiques locales américaines que moi! :)
Neither am I.
We’ve got to keep the hope alive. He won’t be able to do everything he wants to do. And some things will take time. But he needs support. Think of all the promises that trump has made and immediately reneged - and his base still supports him and that’s why he has power. Of course we need to hold politicians responsible, but we need to do it in a way that doesn’t splinter our efforts.
typical democrat response
we like our candidate, okay if he does not get anything done not his fault, things take time so can’t fault him if does not get enough done, and the other side is worse
Well nothing is better than making things worse. But I do expect this guy to make some progress, just not on everything.
The point is that 40% of the population will still support trump even though he has failed on many many of his promises. If progressives flake out just because their guy doesn’t manage to do everything at once, we hand the control to the assholes who will actively make things worse.
