I can barely keep from palmheeling the touch-screen anytime that there’s no human staff to take my order/money, you couldn’t pay me to tip a robot that serves me lunch. What the fuck is it doing, saving up to pay for college tuition or take its kitten to the vet for its annual checkup, paying rent, going to the Orthodontist for braces?

Can I have a source on this? I bet this was a questionnaire asked by a marketing agency to a paid “control group”, making it absolutely useless data

For several years, there was a coffee shop in a mall near me called Barista Bot or something like that. Their payment screens had a tip option, and it looked to me like most people were tipping. These businesses exist; there’s real data on consumer behaviors out there.

This fucking “if the service is exceptional” makes me always think about that scene in Reservoir Dogs, although the sentiment of it was pro-tipping, which is terrible.

Not an attack on you, I’ve just gone off the use of “clanker”. Because why do we feel a need to create a slur? It feels weird after some introspection.

It’s not a slur, it’s an insult! I don’t understand how people get this confused or purposefully attempt to conflate the terms, diluting their power by watering down the meaning of slurs. Slurs do serious harm to minority, racial, and ethnic groups! A MACHINE or SOFTWARE is not a vulnerable person/group that can be harmed by a WORD (a slur is also a dog whistle for other bigots), machines/software are merely tools without soul or mind. Often AI Sympathizers/Hope-Posters try to conflate slur with insult, diluting the ability for people to rightfully call out AI nonsense and mocking the very notion of “AI” which is absolute nonsense.

We won’t even get into some of the more egregious attempts to convert existing, real slurs into anti-LLM equivalents, which I have seen and heard other people recount. The word “clanker” is clearly being used as a slur despite lacking a vulnerable target to make it a slur in truth. Just as some people make jokes about a scenario where future androids try to reclaim it as “clanka”, it echoes something that I believe needs introspection from more people. Yes, I understand the concept of joke but the premise didn’t need explanation because the parallels were already there. We’re all saying that LLMs aren’t people, let alone vulnerable minorities, but that just seems to convince people to use them because they are “safe”.

If you make up a slur for a nonexistent group, blindly using it with invective, very few people will say “haha, it’s fine that they keep using these untargeted, but weirdly-charged, terms because the group doesn’t exist”.

If you want to be mad about “AI”, go behead a billionaire instead of making posts like “clankers should stay out of art. that’s for humans.”

I feel you should be a fiction writer because while you are chatting absolute shit, you’re at least creative about it. I hope you come back to reality one day…Good luck, person on the web!

I do write fiction. Not professionally because I’m still working on the craft, but we’ll get there.

Slurs are used to show distain and disrespect. Thats why it is bad to use slurs for human characteristics like race or gender, and harmless to use slurs for robots.

Yeah, robots and LLMs don’t give a shit because they don’t think. Which makes it even weirder to try and “demean” it.

People could insult them normally: call them idiotic wastes of water, energy, and investment but they choose to create slurs that the LLMs can barely parse, let alone internalize. Robots can’t think nor have conceptions of themselves as anything that a slur can drag them down from. Which means the slur is entirely self-serving for the speaker. What need is the compulsion to use slurs, even devoid of a valid target, serving? At best, it’s flirting with taboos because they’re forbidden, like a kid puffing on candy cigarettes.

Also this isn’t a critique against your reply, just sharing a correction, but “distain” is so archaic that I think you meant “disdain”. Pardon if you did mean “distain”; it just struck me as odd.

Do you think the point of the slurs is to insult the llm itself?? No… its to communicate to other humans that you dislike LLMs.
