Thanks for checking! Only two years… I suppose it’s possible that he’s undergone some significant soul-searching in the past two years. But it’s unlikely. Probably still an asshole.
I don’t know why people are upvoting this. It’s not fun and it’s just saying that is ok to be an asshole on the internet and that if we don’t stand assholes, we should leave the place.
Sorry but no. Fuck assholes. I shouldn’t “grow a thicker skin”, assholes should face consequences as they face them in the outside world.

Who gets to define what “mean” is? The US has a man baby in charge who thinks it’s treason if you point out that he’s wrong. It has a psychotic billionaire that accidentally bought a social media company and nearly wrecked three other companies in the process just because he thought some kid was being mean to him by republishing already public information on social media.
I doubt if anyone up voted this post because they think you should be allowed to drive someone to suicide. They are probably up voting because there’s a portion of the population that thinks they should be able to police what other people say and think.

While I agree with this sentiment, some places are easier to just avoid, be it Reddit, x, or wherever.
If you go on a tankie instance to discuss the finer points of day trading, you’re gonna have a bad time, and might be better off going somewhere else, provided they don’t ban you.
Personally I just block annoyances and move on, no point in me getting upset at people spamming in German in English communities, and I’ve got no interest in interacting with it.

someone personally made it their mission to relentlessly belittle me for five straight years to the point it escalated into me having to get law enforcement involved as they physically showed up to a place I frequented. every singular thing I possibly could have done made it significantly worse, and this comic (among other weird Twitter adjacent artists who seemingly hate their fans for some reason) is essentially a rich guy telling other people they shouldn’t let comments get to them in the most snobby way possible.
People like me don’t really have an opportunity to make friends because of various mental issues and extreme sensitivity due to other issues. I don’t know this guy besides seeing a post he liked online which was essentially a artist saying they hate their fans (???), I dunno who he is as a person.
but I think it takes an insanely delusional type of person as to where it’s a personal fault you don’t want to face sexist and disgusting comments online. We should be striving for change. People online in the early 2000s were fucking insanely racist towards Asian people and still are in smaller circles. that’s actual harassment, not just mean comments. typically when people say they’re reading mean comments it’s usually diabolical shit.

My comment was intentionally written to avoid complaining, because I knew that if it was a complaint, people would complain about it.

This is really simple kindergarten shit but people struggle with it still: people can control their actions, but not their feelings.
You can choose to be an asshole, or not to be an asshole. You can’t choose to feel happy when you’re sad, or to not feel scared.
If you are hurting people’s feelings without a good reason, just for your own amusement or the amusement of others, you are just a horrible person.
I don’t agree. I needed help about Fortran on Stack Overflow and I knew it was very fundamental, but I couldn’t figure it out. One dude on SO decided to be mean, when they could have answered the question. I was already struggling with depression, and this guy’s comment pushed over the edge and for the first time, I attempted suicide(not very well, but still).
Being mean on the internet can cause real harm.

I mean, essentially all users on the Threadiverse, Reddit, etc are pseudonymous. Not exactly the same thing as anonymity, but pretty close.
EDIT: And I kinda think that the Penny Arcade most-likely actually meant pseudonymity, since actually doing anonymity is fairly uncommon. 4chan.org does anonymity. Slashdot.org optionally does it. My guess is that he was probably thinking of some multiplayer game, if not a video game forum, given that Penny Arcade subject matter is video games, and those tend to be pseudonymous, where a user selects and uses some kind of persistent handle visible to others.
Feels like this would have been relevant in 2001.

It takes less effort to downvote a rude comment than it did for the rude person to make it. Takes even less effort to simply ignore it. Don’t even give it air.
Know that they made the comment because of ego they are, not because of who you are — unless you’re a shit disturber who had the comment coming. Either way, once it’s in your inbox, you can simply ignore it, or downvote it.
Or you can block the person.
