If he died, his suffering would have ended.
I like to think he never dies, he’s just kept alive by a confluence of sci-fi anomalies and technobabble (some of it his own making) alternating between suffering/torment and respite where he gets to solve interesting engineering problems. In the end, he solves all remaining engineering problems, which ends the universe and replaces it with something new, different and even stranger, and he ends up being God for that new iteration.
He’s Star Trek’s Kenny
I love that xD
O’Brien: the Engineer Without Fear.
Engineering fears O’Brien.
Fear engineered O’Brien.
Set aside the actual statistics that say this isn’t accurate, O’Brien was a named character. Most who die didn’t have a name.
It’s the real reason O’Brien got a statue.

Wonder what happened to the guys who were originally standing in the lineup?

The bouncer wouldn’t let them in the bar. With the Defiant crew, they were at capacity.

That was a luck buffer overrun. It was so much bad luck it flipped over to positive.
Sometimes I think all of DS9 is a holodeck program that Next Generation-era O’Brien puts a buffer clone of himself through occasionally, in a fit of self-loathing.
He didn’t even die and come back to life after killing his own father…
Underwhelming.
