This was pretty close to my guesstimate of 25% voting to separate, with a significant percentage of those voting only to get Ottawa’s attention.

I do believe, if the Senate is to stay, that it should be more representative of populations of the provinces of Canada. Currently far too many from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.

The worry remains that the other 9 questions gives the government a mandate, which nobody wanted a referendum on anyways.

People are literally voting for the alberta government to try and abolish the federal senate.

Where would they go? Make their own country? I have a feeling this is from the biggest idiots in Canada that can’t think past 2 years.

It was so poorly thought through lol. I was arguing with someone about it and they were talking about how much money Alberta is going to save and I was like “In what currency? Because if you leave, d’you think Canada is still going to let you use the Canadian dollar?” and it was like it genuinely hadn’t occurred to them.

And also, Treaty land is federal, not provincial. How was that supposed to work? Never got a good answer on that either.

Alberta would’ve had to be carved up. I wonder if the bigger cities like Calgary and Edmonton would have voted to stay in Canada leaving only the rural rabble to break off.

From the referendum results so far today it looks like that way, yeah. 80-90% in most of the city areas seem to have voted to stay, it’s just higher out in the sticks.

Now that this is off the table, the minority that voted for a referendum should join hands with all Canadians and put the entire country forward. Be constructive instead of destructive!

Questions 6-9 say “working with the governments of other willing provinces”, so hopefully the other provinces will just tell Alberta to fuck off and then we don’t have to worry about those, but you never know.

at some point this morning she needs to resign. she has to.

also I’m of the opinion that her and the 23% that voted for this need to be arrested by the RCMP for treason but that’s just a hollow pipe dream of mine.

Why would she possibly resign? She allowed the referendum to keep the most extreme parts of her base happy, but spoke just enough of unity to keep the other ones happy. She’d probably win an election tomorrow because at the end of the day the majority of voting Albertans is stupid

She won’t. There will be no accountability. If she resigns it will be because her band of traitors stab her in the back, not out of any sense of obligation to step down, down the right thing or anything approximating moral clarity.
