You think this wasn’t part of the plan? Crash the economy, then use the bad economy as a rationale to impose deep austerity and privatization.

Plus, it’s easier to commit atrocities against your citizens when the free world can’t see. Wealthy Russians and Saudis will still visit.

As a US citizen I’m nervous to do international tourism as well after hearing so many people get detained at the border. It’s crazy.

Bizarre AI photo at the top, no author byline, no link to the source of the data (if there is one), no specific report mentioned, just “the latest analysis”.

This looks to me like an AI-generated article where someone either prompted it to “summarize” a real report or else it hallucinated a report based on whatever supposedly relevant internet news it’s eaten recently.

Going to the site that comes up for a search for World Travel & Tourism Council and looking around on it, I don’t see a report on this topic.

Why would you not want to visit a fascist hell-hole where human rights don’t exist, the rule of law has broken down, and you can be abducted, imprisoned without charge or deported at any moment just for the crime of being foreign?

Last time housing prices crashed in the USA, people’s incomes crashed as well or their mortgage obtaining ability did. All it meant was that the already rich and corporations were able to buy up real estate cheap. Did not remotely help 90% of the population.

Something like half of all real estate is owned by private equity.

If you genuinely care about wealth consolidation among the ultra-rich, and you seriously want to do something about it, there’s a Little Red Book with some helpful advice.

But just propping up Boomer real estate values for another ten years isn’t an answer either. It’s a losing game to pretend you can outwit Blackrock on home ownership.

Let’s fucking go! Keep it up everyone, make people here really see and feel the consequences.

I’m under no illusion that anyone who voted for this will “feel bad” or regret their vote. As we have been seeing the people who voted for this do not regret their decision perse. However, the hate that fuels them will only take them so far. If things get bad enough quick enough they might be able to remember it the next time (if there ever is one). I think the cult following of Trump and their emotional sunk cost fallacy won’t let them see that voting for Trump was a bad idea, but there is a small chance they will recognize and reject it in whoever comes next.

I’m under no illusion the above will actually happen, I just think it’s the best that can be hoped for.

I live in a major tourist city, and the word around town is that there will be a steep decline from foreign visitors, but many are still coming anyway, because they’ve had their vacations booked for months, and it’s too late to change.

But if this keeps up, next summer will be a bloodbath.

i’d say it’s both: why would you risk being detained at the border, potentially be subject to general abuse when you’re in the country because you’re “foreign”, detained in the country for… who the fuck knows, AND because america first means your tourism money supports a country actively bullying your home country

Why would you let anyone take you at all?

They won’t take me from my house alive and I don’t understand how they’re doing it to anyone else. I’ve been told since birth never let a man take me to an unknown place.

No way the vast majority of humans even know about people being detained at the border. I’ll say that confidently because it’s pretty obvious the amount of humans I interact with on a daily basis. Don’t know shit about shit about shit about shit. Now we got some of them, insisting Proven science like polio vaccines don’t actually work and are making you out to be the asshole if you get a vaccine and go out in public.

I don’t actually think that any human on this planet is any better than that. I would be willing to bet that most human beings know way more about someone like Tiger King or whoever was the latest Netflix special then they do about Politics or anything going on in the world. And this level of bullshit continues because there’s no end to people insisting that it’s perfectly OK to not pay any attention and then they turnaround and insist those same exact people need to go out and vote. The people that don’t know shit the people that don’t pay attention the that don’t fucking know anything are all voting And they think that it’s their damn duty to know nothing and vote.

And if you think any fucking person in any country is any different, you’re gonna be really shocked when you find out how shit we all are. 30% of the world will support fascism. Done. 30% of humans are fucked From the jump. That’s the reality we’re dealing with 30% the vein that continues through all of history. 30% of Humanity are shit. 30% of us are going to drag the rest to hell.

the news in australia is pretty straight up about it… honestly we get about as much trump news as australian politics, and since they detained an aussie everyone has been very wary. i can only assume the same is true for the rest of the world (i watch some UK news media and it seems similar in tone)

i think you’re underestimating the mood outside the US… everyone is aware… not everyone is boycotting (because that’s too hard i guess) but very few people are actively making plans to visit. why would you?

both for self preservation reasons (people are doing this), and for just “fuck you” reasons: never underestimate humanity’s desire to knock the “top dog” down a few pegs especially if it’s for “my tribe” reasons

I think people would visit even if we were fascist. The thing keeping everyone away is the significantly greater than zero chance that you and your family might get picked up by ICE and questioned under duress for several days simply for trying to visit Disney World.

Well, that’s a key part of the fascism. Obviously Europeans vacationing at the House of Mouse didn’t care what the social services were like in the USA, or how affordable homes were, or what Disney employees had unions. But a country like the USA that follows no moral code is not a safe place to be in, period.

Trump is enacting his isolationist worldview through his trade war, and using secret police effort to terrorize and abduct non-citizens. This is going to isolate and ward off foreign business and visitors. No surprise there.

This is going to isolate and ward off foreign business and visitors.

Also having tariff policies that just change every 5 minutes makes it rather hard to plan ahead, and businesses hate that. A lot of the companies that we work with have changed their policies so that the shipping fees to the US are either huge, or have restrictions on them such as at least €200 worth of product have to be spent before they’ll ship anything. Meanwhile they’ll ship to Indonesia for free for a product that cost €40.

This is because the time between shipping the product and the product being received in the US global trade policy might have changed six times. The only way to plan for that is to have a huge profit margin to absorb the weirdness.

Yeah, we’ll see. It’s basically expecting the rest of the West to act differently. Maybe they’ll surprise me. However, it’s not like I don’t have perfect examples right off the top my head like France and Roman Polanski for instance. Kinda makes me think that people are shit no matter where they’re at, and they’re gonna visit if they feel like visiting here. If the marketing is good enough, the fascism won’t matter and I would be willing to bet on it.

No, I don’t think that Europeans are somehow better humans than any other human on the planet. We’re all shit and we’re gonna prove that correct.
