The person accidentally added to the group chat, which appears to contain six people, said they had no idea why they had received these messages, and shared screenshots of the chat with 404 Media. 404 Media granted the person anonymity to protect them from retaliation.

One of six will not be hard to find… I mean, what?

Can we take a second and appreciate the person who got these messages and took them to the media? Putting myself in their shoes, I’d be scared shitless and you can easily see how it might make you a target. Good on you random citizen, I appreciate you.

I want to know how difficult it will be for them to look back at their texts, extract the phone number, and backtrace it to the owner. Because I don’t think it will be very difficult.

Exactly. This citizen’s identity is not a secret to the people in the convo. It’s a brave move and I respect the hell out of it.

Yeah, I’d say they should only have shared it with the news if the news also named and identified them clearly every time the photos are shared. Corruption dies in sunlight. The dangerous ones already know, might as well hang a lantern on any attempts at retaliation.

And it wasn’t even Signal, an actually encrypted platform this time.

It was SMS & MMS. As in, the known to be very low security, non-encrypted protocols used for basic texting.

Funny the article starts with "The texts were sent to a group called “Mass Text” "

Well, duh, that’s how a group MMS is represented. There is no concept of chat group names in MMS.

Yeah my android phone(and my coworkers iPhones) would like a word with you. Because they absolutely do use group chat names now, and one person changing it can affect everyone in the group. Ask me how I know. Maybe it’s not “MMS protocol”, but you’re literally nitpicking over the name they reported, so fair game.

The default is to just list everyone in the chat, but that in itself is literally used as “the group name”.

That is RCS chat, friend. Although one can name a group text locally whatever they choose. It doesn’t populate the group in MMS, there’s not a field to specify that.

So they said MMS instead of RCS. You’re over here acting like they’re braindead morons cus they cot the name of a protocol most people don’t know right, but used the one most people do. Oh boo hoo.

            You’re being a pedantic ass.

You had attitude, so I replied in jest, in kind. Chill, yo. It’s humorous that the article postured it like an item of note when it was a nothingburger.

      no, we’re dumb….

about an active search for a convicted attempted murderer seemingly marked for deportation

most of the people they’ve been hunting have no criminal record or just minor offenses: this was likely leaked on purpose to further the narrative that they’re going after violent criminals only….
