My theory was that it was so many teenagers traveling a long way to a big tournament who couldn’t afford to just get a hotel room the night before. So they’d sleep at their friends house or whatever, and then just show up in whatever condition.

But having the problem at the local game shop kind of defeats that theory.

When my parents bought their house, there were hoarders renting out the lower flat. when they opened the door, it smelled awful. Kids being kids, I just flat out asked one of their kids “Why does your flat stink so much?”. They told me, it does not stink ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. So you can get insensitive about stuff like that.

On another note: my wife can taste stuff I cannot taste. I can see better than other folks while my hearing is really bad. So senses work differently for different humans. So while I can smell myself as well, that does not need to hold true for others.

Pre-pandemic, we had a couple (as in they are together) over for supper. They’ve been friends with my wife for over twenty years now. They’ve always been into board and video games (each has their own gaming rig and every console), and overweight. Something had recently changed because their higiene had been ok so far. At some point in the conversation, it came up that they had done some research and found that IT WASN’T HEALTHY TO SHOWER EVERY DAY. They were now doing it once a week since “they didn’t exercise anyway”. Obviously, they smelled and I made that clear. We didn’t hear from them for some time after that. These were two adults who had jobs and owned a house. Mind you, their house cleaning habits had also deteriorated.

This is fresh in my mind because I just took my kids to a game store to buy a gift for someone who wanted Pokemon cards. Big mistake.

Unfortunately I picked the day they had a MTG tournament. We barely got inside when the wall of stench hit us. One of them noticed a guys hairy ass crack hanging out as well. They were very verbal about both and I don’t blame them.

Decided to just go somewhere else because it was unbearable. The whole ride they couldn’t stop talking about how it smelled like unwashed ass, BO, and sour milk.

I don’t know about her genes, but I once had a coworker who you could tell didn’t use deodorant, but in a clean, freshly-showered way. I absolutely adored her smell when we got into a situation where she was reaching up very near me. It wasn’t like the nothing or soap smell you get after a shower, but a human smell. It made me feel very content.

That’s what happens when you don’t nuke your pits and privates with soap every day. You develop healthy bacteria colonies that don’t stink, and which compete with the stinky bacteria for resources. Water and friction is enough for daily washing. Soap is for every couple of days. Except for your hands, wash your hands with soap every day.

FYI - you do not need to shower daily.

Although you can never admit this publically, as it has become the social expectation. But feel free to move to an alternate day shower routine if you haven’t had a sweaty day. I guarantee no one will notice. Your skin will be less dried out. You’ll save a not-insignificant-amount in water and energy and time.

Body odour comes from not showering for very many days, and more so from wearing unwashed smelly clothes.

You don’t need to shower daily. You absolutely do need to wash yourself in some other way, like with a washcloth. Unless you have no BO at all, more likely than not that bacteria colony under the armpits will make you smell bad regardless of if you had a “sweaty day” or not. Plus, wearing clean clothes helps a lot.

Anecdotally, I went to a gaming convention once and that taught me to never do it again. The smell was so bad. Living the stereotype. And on a recent concert I had someone stink so bad in front of me, it ruined the experience.

Also, as a side note. The article giving an example about why someone doesn’t shower being not liking having wet hair. I’ve heard this once. Do people not know they can just… tie their hair in a bun if it’s longer or just avoid wetting it if it’s short?

If your hair needs to be treated with a straightener or something, the humidity will mess it up. This is exactly why I cut off all my hair even though I love long hair, so I understand the complaint completely.

Whether or not you need to shower daily comes down to personal body chemistry and activity though. I have to shower one or twice a day since going on testosterone, but I could get away with every third day prior to that. The difference in smell is so staggering. I have to wash my face multiple times throughout the day now as well, but I’ve got fully make-up’d coworkers who are fine all day. It’s just that our bodies are different.

I don’t mean to complain about the sign’s wording though; I think it’s meant to give hygienic advice rather than actually police what products everyone is using and how often.

Oh great, more health advice from unqualified randos online.

Not everyone’s bodies have the same needs and people should be cautious about blindly following whatever advice someone confidently suggests. If you want to shower less, please talk to a doctor/dermatologist first.

My sensitive skin has a maybe 36 hour limit without washing before it gets distractingly itchy. There’s no way this advice could work for everyone.

Just be careful out there, people.

There was no need to get confrontational.
If you are itchy, shower, no one forbade you. Just, it’s not needed by the vast majority of people. It is but a social norm.
It is also detrimental to shower everyday with soaps.

I hate the way deodorant smells, and I know that may sound oxymoronic, but I guess that’s false advertising for you. I’ve met plenty of clean, well-groomed men, really classy fellas, who stunk to me because they wore deodorant. No insult on them, I just don’t personally like it.

I make an effort to use the appropriate amount of soap so as to cultivate inoffensive bacteria in my sweaty areas while killing off the stinky ones. The mammalian body is designed to be an ecosystem for bacteria. Scientists have raised germ-free mice in labs by keeping them away from other mice and feeding them formula instead of milk, and that’s not natural. When they’re introduced to other mice, they catch whatever those mice have. Some mice have nice germs, some nice have nasty ones. There are no mice outside of labs who have no germs.

Most people use too much soap and basically nuke their privates every day. Then they act shocked when the stinky bacteria recolonise that free real estate faster than the nice ones. So they nuke again, and the whole cycle starts anew. Water and friction are enough for everyday, and use soap every couple of days or when things get nasty. Not too much, just enough to restore the equilibrium. Do that, and you won’t be getting foul enough on a daily basis to need deodorant.

Most deodorants are both deodorant and antiperspirant, but you can find options that are just the latter and otherwise unscented. You could also pair it with cologne if there are types that don’t bother you, but people mainly care about not smelling sweat.
