As disgusted as I am with the people that have been openly celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination, I don’t think death should automatically make somebody immune from criticism. All Kimmel did was point out that the MAGA crowd are desperately trying to characterize Tyler Robinson as a dangerous leftist, despite evidence so far pointing to him being a Gropyer (alt-right white nationalist faction that has openly feuded with Charlie Kirk.)
Kimmel deserves better than to be cancelled because Trump is a twiggered wittle snowflake who can take about as much criticism as a Reddit or Discord moderator.
Thinking of canceling Disney+? You’re not alone
I already cancelled mine over a year ago because Disney tried to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit on the grounds that the family had agreed to a forced arbitration clause, all because their daughter signed up for a Disney+ trial. Do I even need to explain how much of a ***cunt ***you need to be in order to wave a forced arbitration agreement at a grieving family whose loved one was killed by the gross negligence of a staff member?
(also, the fact that I can type this comment on Lemmy and not Reddit says it all.)
Just the cancellation page? That’s not suspicious at all…
I’m sure it’s antifi’s doing
I feel sad that I can’t boycott these spineless cowards because I haven’t been a customer since forever.
I never was a customer, so I’m not sure what to do in this situation?
Unfortunately I can’t cancel, as I’m not a subscriber. I’ll at least go and hammer refresh on their cancellation page with caching turned off.
Why would you make it harder for people to cancel?
You should ddos the subscribe page instead.
damn why didn’t I think of that
That’s just making it harder for people who actually want to quit.
… and I added abc.com and disney+ to dns rewrite in my network to group pointing to ip 666.666.666.666. So no disney for anyone visiting our accommodation and outdoor adventures. They can watch it over their own data.
Walt Disney used to attend meetings of the German American Bund. They have a long and deep relationship with fascists.
Like many are saying, don’t give them your money back if they bring Jimmy back. Hopefully, Jimmy knows how well he could do away from the influences of such people, and he’ll say “nah thanks”
I would imagine that the crash was mandated by management.
“Make that page accidentally crash right now!”
Don’t forget to put you reviews on app stores, with how many stars you deem appropriate
It doesn’t take a lot of pressure to make a company cave, the James Gunn saga is one example.
If this causes a noticeable drop in revenue for them, they will care.
It won’t cause a noticeable drop more than having their broadcasting license revoked, which is what they were threatened with. Kimmel will likely cave.
That would be a blatant first amendment violation. Their capitulation is the only thing making the threat function.
No it “would” not be, it is. Don’t know if you’ve noticed but our gov hasn’t cared about the constitution for a long time, and no time less than today where people are being deported and imprisoned in concentration camps with no due process.
Trump has gone on record saying he does not care about the law.
Do you see national guard troops in Chicago? Guess what, there’s still limits as long as we stop giving ground.
I certainly did see them canvassing DC. I am not “giving” anything. I’m just discussing the finances of the situation.
But they won’t really care, in a moral sense, they’ll just do what helps them make money. They’re all soulless.
Not to sound like a broken record, but this is again a real world example of why corporations aren’t people. The entire point of forming a corporation is to make a company completely devoid of individual responsibility. It becomes its own entity, but that entity is a machine. Each individual within the company is just following a predetermined set of rules/orders.
They’ll always just do what helps them make money over what is moral, but I don’t even believe that’s a disparaging remark as much as a factual one. It’s just how corporations are meant to work.
Corporations are absolved of moral responsibility just like any machine. Since the ends have already been predetermined, the closest to individual autonomy humans have is the decision to participate or not.
Either they make money, or they don’t survive. Starving corporations by not feeding them your money is literally the only way to force them to change their predetermined survival strategy or perish. It’s also why huge conglomerates that take away any choice in support are such a threat. If we keep allowing them, ultimately, humans will probably be forced to either just give in to the machine or boycott modern society altogether.
The problem is, there was no reason to cave. Likewise there is no reason for Kimmel to even come back if they can waffle so easily, he doesn’t need the money and could probably shop a show on cable somewhere to have more say in how he can make fun of a current administration however fascist they wanna play or how much they want to play the victim.
From what I understand based on Colbert’s monologue, their motivations for suspending Kimmel is completely monetary based. ABC affiliate company Nexstar made a $6.2 billion deal to acquire TEGNA Inc and Disney which owns ABC made a deal to get some NFL assets in exchange for a 10% stake in ESPN (valued at around $3 billion).
Both of these acquisitions will need FCC approval to go through. Take a guess at what they’re willing to do to get that approval.
Sinclair is already a monopoly that holds 100x more influence than any company should ever be allowed… therefore all participants motivations are entirely criminal; only to further entrench their pre-existing illegal monopoly.
You’re not wrong, I personally didn’t even like Kimmel, but money walks, and I hope it still has some speech left to it.
Yeah honestly never cared much for him. Which last time I checked meant you just didn’t watch him. But apparently that’s just another difference between me and tangerine palpatine.
Release another popular show and people will come back. Political activism by not watching tv is the bottom of the barrel.
MONEY is all they care about. So it matters.
Political activism by withdrawing payment is the most powerful form of activism.
I think “thoughts and prayers” are the bottom of the barrel. This is actively withholding money from Disney. And Disney LOVES money. If enough people stop giving Disney money, then the “line goes up” people will not get tens of millions of dollars and they’ll have to take some action. This isn’t a meaningless gesture. Obviously it depends on how many people cancel their subscriptions. How’s spotify doing nowadays?
You are right. There is always lower. But it would be naive to bet on internet hype for having any consequences. Yes , you, me, many here, might change purchasing behavior for longer. But this is a microcosm and such a tiny fraction of the mass.
Maybe you are young and full of hope and I am old and already disenchanted. Don’t change.
Maybe you are young and full of hope and I am old and already disenchanted. Don’t change.
i too feel old and tired. Sometimes i make comments like you did. We should change.
we should stay as allies of the young who have the energy to believe in change
Can they? At least on the marvel and star wars side they’ve been releasing pure garbage.
One single page crashed? Crazy!
Well that page should be controlled by a load balancer sent to several servers to handle the load. Strange for a corporation at that level to not mitigate traffic and get ddos by its customers.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack#Distributed_DoS
In a company with their money? When their service is made to handle huge amounts of data for streaming? Yeah, pretty crazy.
