Circuit court justice Diane Goodstein, who ruled against Trump administration last month, was out walking when mansion erupted into flames
Good.
I hate rich people.
Uh… kinda weird the valuation of the home is in the headline, right?
Multiple potential reasons for the property value and ownership.
Waterfront property is $$$, and $1.6m isn’t a surprising number, in fact it’s probably lower than a lot of places.
It could have been a family property. That’s pretty common.
Bought low a long time ago.
Inheritance money.
Spouse has a good paying job.
Judge was a highly paid defense attorney before becoming a judge.
And finally, I have no idea, do judges get paid a shitton?
Very weird unless the headline wants to imply that Democratic judges are corrupt cause how could they afford a $1.5 million home. Although, in some markets, $1.5 million is the average price to buy a house.
Dude a cracker box built in the 1960s in my hood is like 1.2m.
Housing prices are just insane right now. Over the last two years, my parent’s house went from ~$450k (already laughably unreasonable) to $1.1 million. Figuring out how to afford the property taxes has been incredibly stressful, and several other homes in the area have already been sold (to, predictably, huge corporations) by their owners because of the financial strain. Our local laws are a little backwards about that, but only a little. This shit is getting ridiculous.
I mean, it does help drive home how much that fire sucked for her.
In America, we can only seem to relate to each other by buying stuff. The monetary value of a thing is close enough
From the comments:
Two Trump supports in a bar. “Did you hear about the fire at the house of that judge that ruled against the boss?”
“Shhh - it’s tomorrow!”
I’m sure it was a black Mexican Trans antifa gang member who did it /s
“FALSE FLAG!!!”
Don’t forget, they wrote “ANTI LAW” on the firestarter
I feel the US is hitting boiling point and things are going to go entirely off the rails very soon. Canada will probably need to set up refugee and asylum centres.
Canada had better stock up on drones to deter an invasion.
Thats one of the ‘good’ endings. This could also be part of the beginning of a twenty year period of authoritarianism with little resistance.
Yeah, I’m expecting a slow decline where we wait for the day that never comes until we die.
I feel the US is hitting boiling point and things are going to go entirely off the rails very soon
January 2025 wants it’s comment back.
Just love living under tyranny where opposition is murdered and intimidated in broad daylight.
You should be more concerned about living under tyranny where the fascists aren’t
America is starting to sound more like old Mexico
And Mexico is starting to sound more like old America
It’s too early to make any judgements. We all want to think that it was politically motivated, but it could be anything, from an accident to faulty wiring to spontaneous combustion from a bucket of oily rags in the garage, to a murder-suicide, etc.
Frankly, if this were any other time in America, politically motivated violence would be way down the list, but today it’s the first thing we go to.
It very well may be someone who was inspired by the fire at PA guv Josh Shapiro’s house, but it may be bad wiring, too.
This is sort of in the realm of my career, so from the footage of the fire it started on the lower level of the house. For a house to be that engulfed, during the day, not starting in an attic, while people were there (I’m assuming, since household members were taken to hospital), it isn’t too likely it was just an electrical short. If it didn’t start in the garage, my money is on arson.
Edit: Now read reports stating there was an explosion that kicked things off. Adds a couple more variables that could be non arson related, but arson is still very much on the list.
I don’t doubt that it will eventually turn out to be arson, I’m just cautioning against making snap judgements, and more importantly, acting on them before we know the actual facts.
Immediately after the Oklahoma City Bombing, EVERYBODY blamed Muslims, from the average citizen to national news reporters. It was just ASSUMED. Who else would it be? The first recent Twin Towers attacks were Muslims, and everybody was sensitive to Muslim terrorism.
But my first impression was that it didn’t sit right with me. Why Oklahoma City? Why would Muslims choose there to send their message? Most Muslims have never even heard of Oklahoma City. They would pick a bigger target to send a bigger message, and their history shows them attacking the Olympics, the World Trade Center, Airports, etc., not some random mid-size city in a small state that 99% of Americans will never visit, and know nearly nothing about.
Oklahoma City? That sounded home-grown to me. That’s a target that was picked because of its close proximity. They chose a very volatile bomb, that wouldn’t handle a long trip to a better target, where it could spontaneously explode from hitting a pothole. It had to be deployed close to where it was made, and at that point in time, most Muslims were living in larger cities. Oklahoma City was not the sort of city where there would be a large, activist Muslim community.
And sure enough, when they were caught, they were All-American super right wing ex-military losers, who had some nebulous beef with the government.
MAGAs immediately blame EVERYTHING on the Left, without knowing a single fact, then look stupid when it turns out to be another one of their own, AGAIN. The rest of have to better than that, and be patient and wait until the facts are in.
Frankly, it could just as easily be a lone weirdo, with his own motivations that make absolutely no sense to anybody else. Insane justifications make up probably half of these incidents, and even contribute heavily to our rising politically motivated violence. When MAGA politicians engage in Stochastic Terrorism ("Someone should do something about all these…), they should be aware enough to know that the people who are most likely to answer that call are going to be the most deranged ones from their ranks.
But make no mistake, they are from the MAGA cult. MAGAs can’t point to their mental deficiencies, and claim that’s the real issue. The real issue is that they know these people are among them, they’ve invited them to join, and bring their hate/racism/guns, so when there is a call to action, those are logically going to be the first volunteers. MAGA can’t act so surprised, or disavow the violent actions that they invited and encouraged.
a bucket of oily rags in the garage
who does that aside from Kanye.
That shit happens all the time. My folks were insurance people. Dinner conversation was pretty boring. I’ll never forget the appetizing story about the girl on the snowmobile being decapitated by an old strand of barbed wire in the woods. I wasn’t allowed to ride on snowmobiles.
Don’t talk about his wife like that.
I used to work fire damage jobs, and i can say in 6 years there three people had house fires started by random chemical buckets in their garage. So it does happen, and they were all rich white idiot.
This sucks and all but a $1.5M home? Dayam.
How much was your house?
That’s like a 4 bedroom houde these days most places, though idk what SC realty is like
How much was your house?
most placesin a few large coastal citiesIn SC? Because if you mean in general, I can link a few counterpoints
You have a few links that cover most places?
Careful, you’re about to argue with morons that have no life experience and have been renting their entire lives.
where most
places in a few large coastal citieshouses areNo…
Stop it. Open any real estate site and look for any concentrated listings for homes anywhere in the map, and tell me most 4 bedroom houses are over a million with a straight face.
Real estate is at bubble levels, but it’s absolutely not $1 mil for a 4 bedroom “where most houses are”.
These people have never seriously looked at buying a house because they all live in major cities and know they will never be able to afford one there.
They have no life experience then go on the internet and pat each other on the back about it.
Sure we all make our own assumptions based on our experiences. Here that’s not an expensive house and you’re not going to find many that cheap with four bedrooms. In a lot of places the price is the land and the cost of the house on it is just a small part of what you’d need to pay.
Right, here is keyword. The average citizen doesn’t have the privilege of choosing to live “here”, because while is relatively cheap, it’s still prohibitively expensive.
Just because there are $5 million homes doesn’t make $1 million homes “cheap”.
I live in Tampa. Houses around me are getting pulled down and replaced with 1-1.75M houses at a frightening pace. This has to be a bubble, nobody who works here could afford the rent or mortgage on that. Taxes alone on a 1.5M house would be 24,000 per year!
It is a bubble, and we don’t have to go to extremes.

This house was on the market for $270k, suddenly it’s vacant and going for $575k. Likely the owners couldn’t keep waiting and sold it to a company that put a fresh coat of paint on it and ballooned the price. It’s still not close to $1, and to pretend like you can’t get a decent house in Tampa for less than a million is just apologizing for rich people.
It’s only a ‘bubble’ if the average idiot stops simping for people richer than them.
So no, it’s not a bubble. This is the new reality where the ownership class continues to own more property and the morons renting can rent for the rest of their stupid lives.
This is the system we’ve built, and now we have to live with it.
You will own nothing and like it. Don’t forget to pay your netflix and spotify subscriptions! The people profiting off of those subscriptions need more houses to buy so they can rent them out!
That’s not even in town, New Tampa is technically part of the city but way north, past parts that are unincorporated and farther than Temple Terrace.
We bought our house a few years ago for nearly 300k, and I was so upset because I thought we were at the top of the bubble then. Like, there is no way a house is worth that, it’s insane. But now a smaller house on our road wants $600k (new coat of paint, as you say) a literal empty lot sold for more than our house cost, and they are building horrifying monstrosities like this, it’s so ugly!

I am old enough to remember 2 crashes, one I bought my first house, a shithole but so cheap, and then the bank bailout crash. What goes up comes down, and it always begins with the ‘we will buy your house’ flyers in the mail and people saying real estate always goes up.
Edisto Island is a, relatively, secluded part of SC. It’s the only part where beach front isn’t astronomical. So, it’s actually relatively expensive for the area. Edisto Island is pretty sparse, as far as beach/island areas go. It’s not really comparable to anywhere else in SC. Even Cherry Grove lol
A home in the same area, same beach front style, currently listed at $1.5m
- 4BR/4BA
- 2100sq ft
- Last sold 8 years ago for $566k
- Originally sold in 2011 for $140k (land only)
So new construction, was 1/3 the price just a few years back. Its current valuation and what the judge her former rep husband bought it for was likely nowhere near a price that would be “dayam” territory.
That’s not as insane as it used to be.
In Canada, we call that a 4-bedroom home.
Middle class.
Yeah I was gonna say, that’s what a “mansion” costs in the US?
McMansion
I would like to think that people who frequent this community are not the type to wildly speculate until basic facts are available.
I’d like to think that, but it’s wrong.
I’d like to think that we had a country where the leader didn’t regularly threaten the judiciary with stochastic terrorism.
I’d like to think that, but it’s wrong.
I’d like both things to be true. I’ll start with what I can control today, since my party lost the last national election.
I’m POSITIVE that as the Courts and Judges CONTINUE letting Rich people Free while putting Poor Children in Prison this WONT happen again!
She didn’t release voting records, actively working against the Trump agenda to surpress voting rights.
Im sure she had some issues with judgements, but willing to bet that was the cause of this. She was getting threats pertaining to going against Trump’s bullshit
In this particular case, the judge ruled against Trump. So put your violent fantasy back in the box and maybe never bring it out again.
not familiar with this joke account, it seems
It’s weird. My first thought was Russian troll. But, it seems to get a bunch of upvotes in other comments.
Their comments are satirical, though it’s often subtle
What? Are you talking about?
