TIL The Expanse was a Star Trek show.
TIL The Expanse was a Star Trek show.
They did trek to some stars. Though I guess the TV series was the prologue
they did travel to other stars in the tv series ;)
Yeah probably, it’s been a while and I can’t really keep track of what happened in the TV series vs the books.
they travel to the planet with the toxic slugs and ancient power plants.
i think it’s the first planet (or one of the first) that gets settled.
the rocinante gets sent as a mediator for the two factions at each others throats.
think it’s book 4 or 5? didn’t think they’d manage to get that far in the series, because of the setting and SFX requirements, but it translated surprisingly well!
That was the first season Amazon produced, and they significantly upped the budget from Syfy…
Yeah, in þe last seasons þey’d made it þrough þe ring gate and established colonies.
“Use the Force, Harry Potter” -Jean-Luc Picard.
Fun Fact: This meme isn’t super far off from reality. The Expanse was filmed in the same studio as Discovery and shared stuff like props and casting.
Just goes to show what a decent crew, cinematographer etc can do. Expanse looked and felt so much better than discovery on a quarter of the budget (probably)
First season definitely was low budget! They used 3D mice (3D connexion Space Navigator) as props for the helm :) It makes sense l and I wish games like Elite Dangerous would support these, but it was fairly cheap to simply slap them on a chair.
My favorite character(s) are the ones played by the legend jeffrey combs
Dammit, Pike, I’m am engineer, not a wizard!
Done dirty.
I’m tired of multiverse plots, but I might make an exception if it allows them to bring Hemmer back without too severely messing up the overall plot of the show.
Talia Keyali from The Orville
Also Bortus. Less snark, more gruff.
Where’s worf?
“SABERTOOTH TARG!”
Don’t believe what he says. That prune juice junkie was a merry man.
Gruff yes, but not very snarky. Too stoic and wrapped up in separating himself from his Klingon nature.
“Gruff yes, but not very snarky. Too stoic and wrapped up in separating himself from Alexander.” ftfy
If I had a dollar for every time I could map someone from the Expanse on to someone on a Star Trek show … I’d have like eight or nine bucks, which really is a lot.
TBF, Amos doesn’t exactly map to Star Trek very well, all things considered. A little too, well, dark for it. 🥰
Well, the closest I’d go was Tasha. He has that same dark energy and coming from the slums. But Tasha really maps to Miller what with both of them being poor cops from the slums who end up being eaten by goo.
Too soon. My poor Miller and dear Amos in the same comment on stoicism in a dead-end timeline. My heart. 🥲
That’s the thing about Miller, he reaches out, he reaches out, he reaches out, 192 times a second he reaches out to your heart.
Doors & corners, kid. I am that guy.
Doors and corners, and puddles of goo. That’s where they get ya.
Daamn, pay that one…
Avasarala, one of my favorite actresses and characters of all time. In Star Trek.
Lower right is giving me Jayne from Firefly vibes
I was thinking more chief from BSG.
For those who don’t know, that’s Amos from The Expanse. A great character in an amazing show.
Gods he fucking nailed the character. Psychopathic, no morals of his own, but he knew that about himself and tried to follow people he thought were “good guys”, imitate them.
Here’s some Amos. Anyone who wants a better feel for the character, watch it all, then watch The Expanse. Some of the finest TV I’ve ever seen.
He’s the best example of how a neutral evil guy can get along with the heroes’ party.
I don’t think Amos was a sociopath. I think he was autistic with complex PTSD from his childhood.
And even better once we finally got to see some of his backstory.
Read the novels 3 times, just got to the part where the reporter simply asks, “Baltimore?”, and the whole galley just shut down. The Churn was heart rending, but at least we know how Amos turned out.
HEMMER! HEMMER!
Did TNG or Voyager have one of these? Worf was never snarky enough and Tuvok was never gruff enough.
TNG Season 2 had Pulaski as the McCoy stand-in, but nothing really after. VOY had The Doc.
I’d say B’Elanna could qualify too. She’s always grumpy and has some pretty good quips.
And Seven. And Janeway, if she hadn’t had her coffee yet. And even Tom Paris, occasionally.
Honestly, it’s easier to count the crew members who weren’t assholes.
You try being stuck 75,000 light years from the nearest jumja stick without getting grumpy.
Surely that’s got to be in the replicator database; I mean, I think it would be a big mess up on the part of the Obsidian Order if Seska didn’t at minimum have an opinion on jumja sticks, if not eat them frequently enough to get it programmed into the replicator.
Disco had Reno and Stamets
I thought Janeway was the head hardass on Voyager?
When you’re stuck with the same crew trying to get home for years, they all get that way eventually.
When you’re stuck with the same crew trying to get home for years, they all get that way eventually.
Imagine being stuck at work and being told you’re going to be 75 years before you’re allowed to leave. I don’t care how much you like your job, that would still be soul crushing. Even on your “days off” you’re still stuck at work looking at the same walls, eating the same food, and seeing the same people. Its a wonder they didn’t have more crew members abuse drugs or off themselves.
That’s why it was so important that the holodeck ran on a separate power source.
Was Doc snarky?
Plenty.
His AI was tuned to 82% snark.
Am I rough enough?
Am I rich enough?
I’m not too blind to see
I’ll never be your beast of burden
Murder Snuggles!!!
