Elections are run by the states. State officials decide to hold them and run them. If a Republican-majority state doesn’t, then they don’t get representation in Congress.

They stopped an elected member from being sworn in for quite a while recently. This proved that there’s nothing stopping them from doing this. There’s no reason they can’t do the same on a larger scale.

I get that, but he has already talked about trying to cancel them and declaring a state of emergency to justify it multiple times. I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m just saying that relying on our system to correct this mistake hasn’t worked so far and I’m starting to doubt that it’s going to hold up to correct it at all at this point. I wouldn’t put it past him to mobilize whatever willing troops he can to directly stop local elections. I also live in a newly potentially purple state, so I guess I’m pretty dubious of everything surrounding this upcoming midterm regarding normalcy

Fascists just love and adore fake appearances. They are all about the propaganda and getting their hardcore base to rally around a common cause. That’s why the Reichstag fire was so effective for Hitler, it was easy to scapegoat the communists and old government and get the base to support the idea of taking complete power.

Sure, trump could just declare martial law and seize everything. But it would be significantly easier and longer lasting if he has a Reichstag fire to rally up a January 6th 2.0.

It doesn’t matter if the excuse is plausible. People who want to show their loyalty can do it by claiming to believe the unbelievable thing.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. – Frank Wilhoit

By claiming to believe the lie, you also lay a claim to being part of the in-group so the rules (like telling the truth about things) don’t apply to you. Of course, the truth is that 99.9% of the people who think of themselves as part of the in-group were never part of it, and will eventually be treated the same as the people who they’re trying to trample on.

Rulers need the cooperation of the masses. This is all about concocting a chaotic political environment where people are afraid enough that they won’t stop the power grab.

It’s possible it will backfire, and we should be doing everything in our power to try to make that happen, but that’s the overall strategy.

The cooperation of the masses angle is extremely important. As fucked up and idiotic as it is, many people are fully buying into the narrative that she ran him over and deserved it. It’s hard to believe when you’re here on Lemmy, but it’s working on a shocking amount of people, as well as obviously his base. So waiting for an actual event to point to will legitimize it in a massive way.

Yeah it’s too bad we don’t have clearer video. Like if you watch carefully and thoughtfully, it’s pretty obvious what’s happening but if you’re motivated to lie to yourself, the view is just obscured enough that the deception can survive.

Like a lot of longtime BLM people were puzzled that George Floyd was the one to break the dam of public outrage because things like that happen all the time. But the difference is it was documented so clearly, so intimately, that there was simply no possible justification. We may need a moment like that to break through with ICE and unfortunately I’m not sure it will be Renee Good just because we had bad luck with the camera angle.

So? They don’t need to carry ordnance or provide professional level cinematography results. They just need to have a camera that sends video back to the operator without line of sight so you can keep tabs on somebody from a few blocks away.

I just checked; the updated version of the drone that I own is readily available on Amazon and is manufactured by Xiaomi of all people (FIMI). If it’s banned, they’re not doing a very good job at it. Mine is quite capable of transmitting clean video back to you from over a mile away.

He didn’t deploy the guard, he readied them. Probably a mistake to be honest. If there’s unrest, Trump will immediately federalize them. And since they’re already set, they’ll deploy immediately.

A better move would have been the deputise them, and then abolish the state guard. It would be fought in court later because the guard is required, but that would be later. Meanwhile the state police are entirely under the governors authority. And using the new deputies they would have the man power to monitor and deal with ICE committing illegal acts.

Nitpick: state guard are under state control and cannot be federalized. A state guard would help in this situation because they are wholly controlled by th state.

National guard can be under state OR federal control.

The state national guard is required by law, and only 20 states have a separate state guard. Minnesota technically has an organization for a state guard, but it doesn’t exist right now. Since state guards get no federal funding, and state national guards do, most of the state guards get defunded or were never created. And the governor has no power to press anyone into state guard service, even if he could fund it. He does have indirect authority to deputize anyone into the state police, who are under essentially no control from federal officials.

Deputization is a good start for me. So long as someone offers me comrades, permission to carry, and moral orders, I wouldn’t mind doing my part against ICE. Be it as “escorting” them outside of my state, protecting civilians, or engaging ICE in open battle.

Here’s hoping that the Blue States decide to resist the Trump Regime in all ways.

CBP massing in Minnesota? What’s the deal, lots of people jumping the border in Grand Portage? /s

Citizens are already sick and tired of ICE operations in Minneapolis, but sure, double down and pour more law enforcement into the area. What a fucking joke, not only should reinforcements be assigned from the National Guard, but even the mayor has said they’re unwelcome. Go home Feds, and take your ball with you.

Trump has been asking the DoJ about invoking the Insurrection Act over the immigrant “invasion” since, I believe, inauguration day. The escalation of ICE presence, activity, and tacticsay very well be an intentional effort to provoke a resistance that the DoJ would feel comfortable recommending invoking the Insurrection Act over.

I hear you, and I understand this rationale, but I keep feeling as though a lot of people are missing the subtext - they’re going to do it anyway, they don’t need any actual provocation to take those actions, they’ll manufacture (not quite false flag, but in the ballpark) the scenario and narrative required to strip states, cities. and citizens of their rights.

Conservatives and MAGA are salivating at the opportunity to gain the power needed to liquidate their ideological opponents… Frankly, I’d be shocked if they don’t do it, or at least give it the old college try.

Sure, but they would have done it 8 months ago if they had an excuse. We didn’t give them one, and we made it 8 months more without an escalation to overt declaration of martial law.

Even if it seems inevitable, lots of things can happen that change the calculus in our favor (not least of which is Trump’s black heart finally giving out) by just buying more time. On the other hand, if fed up citizens react with violence, that permanently will normalize what’s happening right now.

From the Lemmy responses I’ve seen, I assume people think that’s naive. But I don’t think people can imaginine how much worse it will get if we make it to an overt military state, and how much higher the challenge will be to revert to a semblance of democracy. It’s a one-way ratchet, they have all the weapons, money and institutions, and that’s why Stephen Miller and Trump are so eager for it.
